As widely reported by the adult media, Angel Face marks the return of the legendary VCX to high-end feature production. Given the company's history, which includes the Taboo franchise, The Erotic Adventures of Candy, A Dirty Western and countless other acknowledged classics, their return to film making is exciting news for the industry. However, the end result, directed by Hall of Famer Roy Karch, while top-notch from every aesthetic standpoint and hot in its sex scenes, leaves a lot to be desired, and suggests that VCX keep the present in mind for future efforts rather than an eye on the past.
Red-headed newcomer Mary McCray is teen aged cheerleader Angel, who decides to leave her dead-end life in the burbs and head for Los Angeles. The news hits her friends hard - fellow pep squad member Dakoda Brookes makes a half-hearted play for Mary's virgin fire-crotch in the showers, only to console herself with a vigorous clit rubdown. Meat-head boyfriend Jenner is equally broken up, and attempts to press Mary for a goodbye fuck in the coach's office. Mary wisely settles for a flash of her creamy, dreamy body and a spittley knob gobble that ends with a load on her pillowy breasts.
Once Mary gets to Hollywood, Karch kicks up just about every hoary trope about the dangers of the Big City imaginable. Mary wanders Hollywood Blvd., suitcase in hand, staring goggle-eyed at the bright lights. The first person she runs into - bald-headed goon Christian - is a snake-eyed pimp who attempts to pull her into his den of inquity (literally - he appears to live in a gritty sort of cave) where cracked-out tramps Jada Fire and Jenny Hendrix claw at each other in pursuit of what appears to be a tablespoon of coke. Mary escapes his clutches, but not before Christian tags both of them. Jada in particular delivers the heat in this scene, and takes the lion's share of the spunk in the final popshot.
Bewildered, Mary drags herself into a cafe, where she meets predatory Eva Angelina, who's trolling the night scene in search of boys and girls to bring back to her lair. Mary quickly falls under her spell and submits to a spectacular tongue-lashing from Eva. She then schools the new girl in the fine art of strap-on fucking before Billy Glide arrives on the scene. Mary takes this as her cue to exit, and Billy unloads the lumber on Eva. I've always found Eva's thermonuclear routine to be kind of a put-on - sort of a 21st century version of Teri Weigel's China Syndrome orgasm routine. Here, she seems genuinely into the action, especially during some pile-driver doggy. I gotta rethink Eva.
Morning finds Mary safe and sound, but unsure of her next move. She then remembers a phone number given to her by her coach (Karch in a hammy cameo), who told her to call his friend should she need any help. Said friend turns out to be beefy photographer Evan Stone, who quickly falls for Mary's corn fed charms, and bangs her silly over the arm of a sofa. Mary's big sex scene is worth the wait - her Big Os seem genuinely and her body in motion is a miracle to behold. Evan's photographer deposits his own photo finish on Mary's Angel Face before we learn that the contact with Evan means that she's now the Next Big Thing in the fashion world. Happy endings - in every sense of the word - are always welcome.
So yes, the sex is hot in Angel Face, no question, and Mary McCray is a welcome addition to the XXX fold. The problem is that you have to sit through a lot of aimless blather and moribund plotting to get to it. Karch is still a solid director - his camera moves are flawless and the sense of voyeurism he brings to the moments before the fucking lend an undeniable heat. But the story itself is both well-worn and drama-free - why bother to build up this plot around this character if she's going to skip away from the sole dramatic challenge in the film (Christian the Pimp) without much of a struggle? One wonders if VCX got a script from Karch that had more peaks and valleys in its storyline and simply shied away from presenting something that might turn off the short attention span of the modern porn consumer? Can't say, but with Angel Face, Karch and VCX haven't really given that person a reason to not hit their fast forward button in order to seek out the sex scenes.
