I received Adam & Eve's Eden in the translucent red HD DVD box and I felt mixed waves of excitement and fear. Fear because I think all of us perverts have a certain apprehension about just how much detail we want to see of the bodies of our favorite porn stars. Excitement because I'm a fan of the no longer produced HD DVD format and I wanted to see how a porn company might make use of the technology. So, this review is not just of the movie, I'll also be covering the next generation DVD format it's presented in.
The DVD menu is very cool. Yeah, that's weird to say about a porn flick, but so many menus on Porn DVDs are uninteresting and this one really stands out as something they put effort into. They made use of the menu styling capabilities of next generation DVDs and it has a very professional elegant feel to it. You can also pull it up in the middle of a scene like any other HD DVD. The chapter navigation in the menu struck me as particularly cool. I have mainstream HD DVDs that don't have a menu this nice. The menu was a surprise and it's worth noting as a feature.
The picture isn't what is called "true HD" the picture is 720p rather than 1080p. The picture is still beautiful and this isn't just because of the lovely women cast, it's also the location selected for Eden, Hawaii, looks quite beautiful at the level of detail presented. The environment is filled with vibrant colors that serve as a gorgeous backdrop for some quite hot scenes. As far as the fear of a little too much detail of the bodies of the performers, this is mitigated by long and medium shots rather than dwelling on the close-ups that film many porn movies. Still, there are moments where you catch sight of a scar or even a bit of cellulite but it's not bad.
The movie actually begins with a bit of a story. Five people, Ava Rose, Tommy Gunn, Courtney Cummz, Jerry, and Carmen Luvana, come to the island resort of Mr. Xavier. Then, the sex begins. That's the bulk of the story, there are some brief hints of story in between scenes, just enough to setup the sex scenes. Generally, that's sufficient for this movie.
The first scene between Carmen Luvana, Courtney Cummz, and Jean ValJean is very hot. It begins with Carmen and Jean riding horses and then fooling around under a tree. Once Jean's pants come off, after vigorously eating Carmen, Courtney joins the pair and both women start sucking his cock. The action progresses from there with each girl trading off on fucking and sucking Jean and each other.
The next scene is cut to with next to no setup. Evan Valentine and Tommy Gunn are walking down the beach and then she starts sucking his cock. After the build up for the previous scene between Carmen, Jean and Courtney, this seemed odd but it wasn't bad. The scene is hot, though, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the previous. Valentine's panting and demands to be fucked don't really work for me in this scene. It was distracting but it didn't ruin the scene.
Bree Olson joins the other island visitors with brief introduction to Mr. Xavier, then we cut to her running into Ava Roberts (Rose), famous actress who apparently portrays a lesbian on TV. Bree asks Ava if she's really a lesbian or if it's all just an act. Ava responds by pulling Bree onto the deck chair and eating her pussy. The setup was a bit of an eye roller. Well, I had to thump myself in the back of the head to get my eyes back to normal I rolled them so hard. The scene itself, though, worked very nicely. I'm iffy about a lot of lesbian scenes, because the women in them are clearly not that into it sometimes and that comes across. That wasn't a problem in this scene. Rose and Olson had an excellent chemistry in the scene. Ava Rose, specifically, was looking very sexy in the scene. I seem to recall her looking unhealthily skinny in previous movies I've reviewed. That wasn't the case here.
The next scene features Evan Stone, Ava Rose, Carmen Luvana and Jerry heading out on a yacht that is supposed to be quite expensive and custom built and so forth. It's a nice set up for the scene between Luvana and Jerry. The rocking of the boat and the waves make for a nice back drop but I just wasn't thrilled by the chemistry between Luvana and Jerry. It wasn't bad it just wasn't really doing it for me like the previous scenes had.
The scene between Luvana and Jerry is followed by Evan Stone and Bree Olson meeting in a garden. How Stone got off the boat, I'm not sure, but after a brief conversation that didn't cause quite as much eye rolling as Olson's conversation with Ava Rose, Stone lifts Olson up onto his shoulders and eats her pussy. This is followed by a slobbery blowjob from Olson that starts to ruin an otherwise promising scene. The scene wasn't bad but was a bit rough in a way that wasn't working for me.
Following his fun with Bree, Ava Rose and Evan Stone go diving and we get some very nice underwater footage before the two are chased back to the beach by sharks. For saving Ava from the sharks Evan Valentine brings Stone a drink on the beach and that leads into sex scene. Valentine and Stone have good chemistry and the scene plays better than Stone and Olson's or Valentine and Gunn's.
The next scene features Carmen Luvana and Courtney Cummz together. Courtney and Carmen have good chemistry in this scene, as they did in the scene with ValJean. The scene works well and there's something about two women together on the beach that is particularly enticing. The scene is very hot and is in an especially beautiful location in a movie filled with gorgeous scenery.
The scene that follows has no real setup and we simply start with Evan Stone stripping off Ava Rose's robe. Unlike every other scene so far, this one is indoors. Rose and Stone have good chemistry together and Rose gives the best blowjob of the movie in the scene. It's probably the sexiest scene of the movie but I was disappointed by it because it was in a bedroom and it wasn't making use of one of the gorgeous locations featured in the other scenes. This made it a bit bland compared to the other scenes in the movie, though, still quite sexy.
The next scene starts with Bree Olson standing between Jean ValJean and Tommy Gunn jerking both of them off and then dropping to her knees to suck their cocks. After the blowjob by Ava Rose in the previous scene this one was not doing it for me. It's the slobbery, frenetic, gagging type of blowjob that makes me limp. That starts the scene off bad for me and I just couldn't really get into the rest of it. Olson is beautiful and I don't really have a problem with ValJean or Gunn but the scene overall didn't really work for me.
The next scene has Ava being saved by Tommy Gunn from an island native who ran off with her. Gunn is then restricted to the house for having a gun, which he used to save Ava. I was a bit disappointed as Ava Rose looked pretty sexy tied to a tree and I was hoping that might be leading to something but instead we get Gunn and Courtney Cummz. It's a good scene with more gorgeous scenery. They have good chemistry together but I found myself wishing something had happened with Ava tied to the tree.
Overall, Eden is good. As far as the story it's a loose structure for the sex scenes to reside in but nothing particularly fascinating and it probably could have been abandoned. The locations are gorgeous and the picture quality of the HD DVD makes the locations really stunning. Most of the sex scenes are hot with only two out of the ten turning me off. Ava Rose, who has been in several of the movies I've reviewed looks particularly good in this movie. I think this movie is a good choice for anyone with a HD DVD player and a High Definition television. If you have Blu-Ray, wait for the movie's release in that format, as the next generation DVD format is really used quite well for this release and I suspect the Blu-Ray version will be of at least equal quality. The movie itself I only rate a 3 out of 5 stars. It's good but I suspect some of the better qualities will be lost on a standard definition DVD.
